As happy as the holidays can be, they also pose many dangerous possibilities to pets. From decorations to foods to chemicals, it’s best to pay close attention to your pets this time of year and know the cautions.

Many holiday plants pose threats to animals when ingested such as holly, mistletoe, poinsettia, lilies and Christmas rose. The stagnant water that can be found under real Christmas tree’s in your home can be toxic when ingested as well. Pine needles can also irritate a pet’s intestine and cause an emergency visit to the vet over the holidays. Remember to be aware that any of these items can cause severe, upset stomachs among your furry friends, so consider gates or spray repellents to keep them away from harmful items and areas.

Other holiday hazards are unsecured Christmas trees– for the pets that love to climb, these can pose serious threats to them and your home when knocked over. Beware of menorahs, candles and liquid potpourri pots around your pets as these can also be hazardous. Decorative bulbs, hooks, various in-home decorations and most especially electrical cords create temptation among our pets these holidays.

Some holiday foods to keep away from your pets include rich favorites such as chocolate, coffee, onions, raw or cooked bones, alcohol and fatty foods. These items can pose serious health complications with your pets. Keep your trash lids on tight and store your food/left overs in secure containers. E-coili and chewed aluminum are definite risks to pets, as well.

And finally, the holidays can be a busy time of year for your household. Make sure your pets have a nice, quiet place to retreat in your home if they don’t want to be around all the hustle and bustle that they may not be used to.

This list may not be complete, but they are still very important to remember during the holidays!
